Informational Meeting - Area Health Education Center

Cass County residents are invited to attend an informational meeting on the proposed Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) which is intended to address the health workforce needs of  north central Indiana counties. The discussion will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 2010, at Ivy Tech Community College.

Community leaders, educators, health care providers, patients, parents, residents – anyone with an interest and a stake in the future of the health care workforce of Cass County are invited to attend. The steering committee, appointed by the Indiana AHEC Program Office in Indianapolis, includes representatives from higher education, public schools, economic development, community foundations, hospitals and other health care providers. 

The Area Health Education Center Program is supported through federal and state funds and was initiated to resolve issues unique to underserved and rural communities including the inequitable distribution of the health care workforce. AHEC programs also focus on improving the diversity of the workforce and the quality of health care provided through continuing education, information and access. 

Indiana's seven AHEC programs currently provide support for all of Indiana, but additional approval has been received for the continued expansion of the program in regions where meeting the needs of health care workforce are more complex. 

The proposed North Central Indiana AHEC would serve Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Fulton, Howard, Miami, Pulaski, Tippecanoe, Tipton and White counties. There are seven AHEC programs already established in Indiana and each has a track record of improving primary and preventative health care in the communities they serve.
